We live in a good era of independent watchmaking. I know this may sound like a strange specific indicator for judging the world, but it's true. Not long ago, a passionate watch collector found it difficult to find what they were looking for outside the world of Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet when searching for highly complex watches. Perhaps occasional Blancpain or Breguet may cause a sensation, but after the quartz crisis, the contracted watch industry focused on what they do best for their own survival, and we should all be grateful for this.
Fortunately, in 2024, those days are gone forever, or at least somewhat alleviated. Since the mid-1990s, the rise of independent brands has been one of the key narrative arcs in the watch industry. It is in this transformation that Laurent Ferrier not only became one of the outstanding figures in the watch industry, but also perfectly summarized the development of the industry in the past few decades. But before starting to look at that watch, it's worth taking some time to think about Laurent Ferrier (this person, not this brand).
