SEIKO is passionate about watchmaking craftsmanship, and its quartz watches have brought about a great revolution in the history of wristwatch development.
The quartz watch developed and launched in 1969 overturned the traditional concept of wristwatches and brought revolutionary changes to the watchmaking industry. A quartz crystal oscillator is installed at the core of this watch to ensure its accuracy. Crystals that are cut into fixed shapes have a characteristic that when a voltage is applied to them, the crystal will produce stable vibrations. For many years, it has been well known that quartz crystal oscillators utilize the electrical properties of crystals to ensure the standard mode of time velocity accuracy. However, in order to fully apply the advantages of quartz crystal in precision to wristwatches, there are still many technical issues that need to be addressed on this industry path.
In 1969, SEIKO successfully solved all the problems and launched its first quartz wristwatch product to the world. It took a total of 10 years from the development of quartz crystal oscillators at Suwa Seiko to the launch of the first quartz wristwatch. In order to make quartz watches practical, SEIKO has created reliable technology. For example, adjusting the shape of quartz crystal cutting to the style of a tuning fork; By developing integrated circuits (ICs) and stepper motors (which can run second by second), we can better utilize the signals emitted from crystal oscillators and perform accurate operations. In addition, SEIKO, with a passion for changing the future manufacturing process of watches, did not monopolize its technology on patent issues, but publicly disclosed it to the world. Shortly thereafter, many of the technologies provided by SEIKO became watchmaking standards worldwide, and to this day, these technologies continue to contribute to the development of the quartz watch manufacturing industry.
Seiko's first quartz watch - SEIKO QUARTZ ASTRON
The SEIKO ASTRON quartz watch, officially launched on December 25, 1969, revolutionized the history of world timekeeping. The quartz frequency of this watch is 8192Hz, which is one fourth of the current quartz frequency of quartz watches. One of the biggest features of this quartz watch is the installation of an open stepper motor, allowing the second hand to run second by second, which has become a major feature of quartz watches.
