Blancpain's M é tiers Rares TM Rare Crafts Workshop continues to explore the master's Japanese ukiyo-e art, launching two new watch models inspired by his series of works from the 1930s.
If 'Surfing in Kanagawa' (1831) is his most famous work, often reproduced and reinterpreted in various forms today, then all of Katsushika Hokusai's (1760-1849) paintings meticulously depict the beauty of 19th-century Japanese scenery. This includes the "Parade of Waterfalls in Various Provinces" series created between 1833 and 1834, which includes two woodcut paintings: "The Waterfall of Yoshino washing horses in Yamato Province" and "The Waterfall of Ono in Kiso Street". Jaeger LeCoultre's M é tiers Rares TM workshop has used these paintings to decorate the back covers of two Reverso Tribute Enamel Hokusai watches. This pair of watches is limited to only 10 pieces each and will be included in the 2021 and 2022 editions, inspired by the talent of this ukiyo-e artist.
In order to reproduce these paintings that can be found by sliding the moving parts of the watch case, and to respect the blue, yellow, brown, and green tones used by this great Japanese master, the craftsmen of the watchmaking factory used miniature enamel painting, coated with about 14 layers, each layer fired at a high temperature of 800 ° C. The dial features multiple hour markers and a crown princess style central pointer, adorned with twisted cord patterns (one grain pattern and the other diamond tapestry) and semi transparent turquoise enamel to reflect time. The hours and minutes are set by the manually wound movement 822, which is housed in a large rectangular platinum case (45.6 x 27.4 mm).
