Search for 'vintage watches' on Kickstarter and you'll see page after page of watches trying to capture the charm of watches from decades ago. Some watches are almost replicas, looking more like replicas than modern interpretations. Others pay tribute to iconic designs while maintaining originality. Although the methods vary, retro style designs are still ubiquitous - they are almost ubiquitous.
Last year, Toronto based Fleux joined the ranks of crowdfunding brands and launched the FLX001 and FLX002 retro style new products, taking a fusion route and drawing inspiration from various classic diving watches. FLX001 features a thick luminescent coating and a chunky orange hour hand, reminiscent of Squale and Vulcain. FLX002 adopts a California dial with a layout of half Roman numerals and half Arabic numerals, which is highly praised by brands such as Rolex and Panerai. FLX003 takes a different perspective and pays tribute to a watch, rather than a specific type. It draws inspiration without reservation from the Omega Seamaster 300 Triangle (also known as the "Big T").
Let's talk about the obvious question: when considering a $500 Omega style diving watch powered by NH38, it's necessary to ask how it differs from other Omega style designs on the market. After all, a 200 meter wristwatch driven by Seiko and produced by Pagani Design Company can be purchased for around $100. I personally own (and proudly wear) many affordable similar brands that I often find on AliExpress. After spending some time using FLX003 (spoiler warning), I think it's a comparison between an apple and an orange. Although a $100 tribute is not wrong, FLX003 focuses more on celebrating classic design rather than specifications per dollar. For Fleux, this celebration begins with a retro proportioned case.
